About the Band:
Gabriela and the Guys is a swinging jazz ensemble including vocalist Gabriela Mootz, delivering timeless standards with the elegance, warmth, and rhythmic sparkle of the golden age of jazz. Drawing inspiration from the great jazz clubs of the 1940s and ’50s, Gabriela’s voice moves effortlessly between lyrical tenderness and playful swing, echoing the spirit of classic interpreters while bringing her own modern ease and presence to the stage. She is joined by an accomplished trio of seasoned musicians, Bassist Patrick Fitzgerald, Pianist Jim Schlauch, Drummer Larry Bicknese.

About the Band Continued:
Bassist Patrick Fitzgerald took an unconventional path from aspiring band director to a career in medicine before returning fully to music after retirement. A “trombone player in recovery,” he found his voice on the double bass through study with Glen Moore, and now performs in small ensembles and big bands including the Carroll Rauum Swing Orchestra and the Minidoka Swing Band, anchoring the group with rich tone and steady swing.
Pianist Jim Schlauch began piano at age six and later devoted himself to jazz, studying with some of Portland’s finest musicians. His experience spans the PCC Jazz Big Band, the Jazztones, the Delight Jazz Quartet, and Four Point Turn, bringing tasteful comping, harmonic color, and a deep understanding of the jazz tradition.
Drummer Larry Bicknese’s musical journey began early on piano before he transitioned to drums to join his first band with his brother. From high school and college performances to professional study at the University of Oregon and mentorship with Mel Brown and Carlton Jackson, he has performed across big bands, jazz combos, and theater productions, including appearances at venues such as the Reser and Portland stages, bringing a steady, swinging pulse to the ensemble.
